{"id":107631,"date":"2025-03-13T18:23:59","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T23:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.wisc.edu\/?p=107631"},"modified":"2025-03-13T18:24:01","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T23:24:01","slug":"hobbs-honored-for-inspiring-instruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.wisc.edu\/blog\/hobbs-honored-for-inspiring-instruction\/","title":{"rendered":"Hobbs honored for inspiring instruction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On March 13, 2025, Dean Ian Robertson held an event to recognize engineering faculty and staff for outstanding contributions. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.engr.wisc.edu\/mse\/Faculty\/Hobbs_Franklin\/\">Franklin Hobbs<\/a>, an assistant teaching professor in materials science and engineering, received the James G. Woodburn Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of Hobbs&#8217; award nomination includes the phrases, &#8220;unanimously selected,&#8221; &#8220;outstanding dedication and service,&#8221; &#8220;most gifted teacher that I have ever witnessed,&#8221; and &#8220;slam-dunk candidate.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, Hobbs&#8217; teaching has made an incredible impact on students in his department, across our college, and even into the rest of the UW-Madison campus. In the past three or so years, Hobbs has taught nearly thirteen-hundred students across four courses spanning department labs, large engineering service courses, and general university courses. He&#8217;s modernized each to build students&#8217; skills and make the content engaging, relevant, memorable and useful while maintaining its rigor. In his courses, he builds rapport and fosters an environment in which students feel safe asking questions. He&#8217;s exceptionally talented at explaining complex topics and relating them to real-world scenarios. Hobbs has been an ambassador for MS&amp;E at scores of recruiting and outreach events and has broadly shared his teaching approach with Wisconsin science teachers. Importantly, he led the Department of Materials Science and Engineering through its ABET accreditation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments from students say it all: &#8220;excellent presenter and superb at explaining topics at a conceptual level,&#8221; &#8220;best teaching style I have experienced so far,&#8221; &#8220;fully changed the way I view what the world is made of,&#8221; and &#8220;helped unlock a passion I hope to explore in my career.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On March 13, 2025, Dean Ian Robertson held an event to recognize engineering faculty and staff for outstanding contributions.
