{"id":101264,"date":"2024-10-01T11:59:28","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T16:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.wisc.edu\/?p=101264"},"modified":"2024-10-01T13:30:43","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T18:30:43","slug":"fulbright-award-sends-phd-student-to-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.wisc.edu\/blog\/fulbright-award-sends-phd-student-to-switzerland\/","title":{"rendered":"Fulbright award sends PhD student to Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rebecca Alcock, a PhD student in <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.wisc.edu\/departments\/industrial-systems-engineering\/\">industrial and systems engineering<\/a> at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has received a Fulbright\/Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship to spend 10 months in Switzerland conducting research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcock (BSBME \u201918, MSBME \u201920) will work with researchers at the Swiss university ETH Z\u00fcrich to improve a technical toolkit she\u2019s developed to help healthcare facilities in under-resourced settings integrate solar power. Alcock, who focuses on clinics that lack access to electricity, has <a href=\"https:\/\/ghi.wisc.edu\/augmenting-microgrid-systems-in-colombia-ghi-partners-with-rebecca-alcock-isye\/\">previously traveled to rural Colombia to test her toolkit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her toolkit includes analytical tools to estimate a clinic\u2019s electrical demands, inform the size of its energy system, and simulate future performance under conditions created by climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeyond ETH Z\u00fcrich, conducting this research in Switzerland, the sustainable development capital and global leader in public health and technological innovation, will unlock access to preeminent climate-health experts and opportunities for researcher-practitioner partnerships that I would not have anywhere else in the world,\u201d Alcock wrote in her application materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in 2024, Alcock spent four-and-a-half months at ETH Z\u00fcrich through a fellowship with the National Centre of Competence in Research, a Swiss scientific agency.
